A Comparison of Hausa and Yoruba Shamanistic Practices

The relationship between Shamans and Secret Societies is a complex and problematic one. There has not been a great deal of literature on the subject even though it is a dramatically significant issue. The general anthropological view has been that Shamans work individually while Secret Societies are social organizations. That may be true so far as it goes. However, is any practice truly individual with no social implication? Similarly is any group activity without implications for an individual in a sociocultural setting? This paper will explore these issues within the context of Hausa and Yoruba shamans and shamanistic practices which affect individual and group life. In the process, spiritual concepts of these great groups will provide context for the discussion.
