Ships in the Modern Age sailed using thousands of tons of hemp in the form of cordage  and sails. This plant substance, a strategic commodity, was a major Spanish necessity  fulfilled in the main by Russian hemp. Promotion of its national cultivation thus became  another factor in Spanish imperial defence strategy. To better understand the development  of hemp’s commission in Granada, various archives have been analysed. This has turned  up evidence of an important Bourbon-era project intervening into Granadine agrarian  structure, with the aim of encouraging cannabis farming in the Kingdom
