My brother was murdered on 9 – 11 -2001 in the World Trade Center, he was not only my only brother, but my best friend, and I hurt every day. Few have more cause to hate terrorism and those who terrorize more than me. I am not a dove, but hawkish on these types of crimes, throughout the world. I am not anti Muslim, but I am anti Islam and all intolerant religions or interpretations of religions. I love my country and am patriotic, though I am not blind to her crimes, flaws and mistakes. I am anti the concept of Manifest Destiny or the ridiculous notion the Uncle Sam should always lead rather than be a team player. I am not a Christian or a Jew, though I grew up as a Protestant. I understand the importance of “Intelligence” agencies and information. I support the death penalty, but not for Muslim terrorists or other religions who see it as a reward. I vehemently agree with those who insist the US must lead by example and not become the beast we are at war with. Not only do I fervently believe the US should close Guantanamo and stop circumventing US law (via the letter and spirit), but we should give back Guantanamo to Cuba. The fact is we squeezed it from Cuba forcefully after breaking not only our word, but a US

amendment in acquiring it. It is on Cuba’s mainland and is part of Cuba, not these United States. There are many strategic reasons why returning this ill begotten property back is the right move, and the smart move. The US requires those who drive to pass a test, just as it requires many professionals to pass tests such as doctors, lawyers, accountants, teachers etc. However we freely give the vote to all, without so much as a civics test? Not too logical is it. Our treatment of Cuba and to a lesser extent Guantanamo Bay are leading examples of the old double standard or wanting our cake and eating it too. It shows our arrogance and poor judgment to not only all of Latin America, but indeed the world. We allow China “Friendly Neighbor Trading Status” and have an embargo on our neighbor 90 miles away? American citizens are forbidden by Uncle Sam to travel to Cuba independently, but we can travel to Iran or North Korea or China? Cuba has less than 500 prisoners the US insists are political prisoners; China has tens of thousands. We accuse Cuba of human rights violations (and certainly they do have some….as we do, and most countries do) while we use tasers, choke holds and harbor terrorists like Luis Posada Carriles? The world is not blind when we abuse prisoners from Abu Gharib to Guantanamo. This year for the twenty third time the UN voted for the US to end its Cuban embargo, of the 193 UN Nations, only Israel and the US voted for retaining. Our greatest allies like Canada, UK, France, Mexico and Australia all enjoy Cuban beaches when we cannot even smoke a Cuban cigar.

The fact is that we need countries like all those in South and Central America, India, Jordan, and even Russia and China to cooperate in reducing terrorism, but we can’t be terrorists ourselves in the process. My habit is to not rant without offering at least a partial solution, and here I will make some suggestions: 1) Eliminate Guantanamo Bay and return the property to its rightful owner, Cuba 2) End the embargo on Cuba and the travel restrictions for U S citizens 3) Establish a global prison system with at the very least NATO members are included (though much better with even our enemies as participants) 4) Revamp the concept of a World Court (like The Hague) to administer external justice, weight the judges so that fairness is paramount and justice is blind 5) Stop rewarding Muslims with the death penalty and stop abusing recognized

international treaties we are signatories to. 6) Start treating neighbors like neighbors and eliminate the Manifest Destiny mentality and economic terrorism tactics, led by the IMF and World Bank. 7) Normalize relations with Cuba, because it looks ludicrous to the world to have China and Russia as allies and not Cuba, we do plenty of business with dictators, communists and socialists already. 8) Try to start considering policy double standards before we implement a policy. 9) Invest in education, revamp financial aid and become a nation of transparency and lead by example, limiting bully tactics. 10) Initiate a comprehensive test for voting; not only will this help with the gridlock that Congress has become, but improve the executive, legislative and judicial branches of our democracy. Remember, a democracy gives everyone the opportunity to vote and therefore allow all citizens to take the test. Our voting totals would certainly increase too, demonstrating the strength of democracy, not its weakness. 11) Do not become or continue to be the beast we wish to slay in terrorism, torture methods are barbaric and should be shunned as much as we shun beheadings.
